Presidio 4 is the successor to the Fairfax SC6 and among the very best-spec'd, best-conceived, best-equipped commuter bikes on the market. It features Gates Carbon Drive (belt drive), an Alfine 11 internally geared hub, Alfine dynamo hub, Supernova lights, Tubus Racktime rack, color-matched metal fenders, and a kickstand. Compare to our Daily Grinder commute version of the Soma Wolverine, and you'll find mostly identical specs as well as a few differences: -Presidio has an aluminum frame and carbon fork, whereas the Wolverine Daily Grinder has a Tange Prestige cromoly frame and either a cromoly or carbon fork. -Presidio has Continental Sport Contact II 700 x 32 tires, while the Wolverine Daily Grinder has wider (700 x 38) Panaracer Pasela gumwall tires. --Presidio comes with higher gearing than Wolverine: 50/22 vs 46/22, although we give our customers the option of 46/22 with Presidio at no charge (just ask). How to know which ratio is for you? If you don't have steep hills to climb and/or a lot of stuff to haul around, and/or if you're a strong rider who likes to go fast, 50/22 should do well for you. If you have climbs to do like those in the West Hills of Portland, or if you're in Seattle, San Francisco, or other hilly locales, 46/22 is recommended. If you're not sure which one you'll like better, don't hesitate to ask us for guidance. This bike was very highly reviewed when it went by its previous moniker: the Fairfax SC6 DLX. Pro tip: as the 2019 Presidio 4 is just about identical to the 2018 Fairfax SC6 DLX, you should know that we have most sizes of the latter on sale for $1899, and that we can ship them. We aren't allowed to ship the Presidio. See Related Items.

Joe Bike's own Soma Wolverine Daily Grinder housebuild features all the things we look for in an ultimate commuter bike: belt drive, internal gearing, robust tires, and disc brakes, along with an optional dynamo system, fenders, and rack. Together these give you a weatherproof, clean, quiet, ultra-low-maintenance bike that's ideal for less-than-perfect conditions. Fully rack- and fender-friendly. Semi-sweptback handlebars give you a slightly more upright position than flat bars will, yet still lets you put your impressive strength into your pedalstroke. The 46/22 gearing with Alfine 8 is set up for moderately high-speed riding on your typical mildly hilly Portland terrain (excluding the west hills, that is). However, if you'll be hauling some weight with you, climbing steep grades, or just wanting to take it easy, we can lighten this up by using a 24t cog...or even a 26t...at no extra charge. Just ask. And now, we can build the Daily Grinder up with drop bars, thanks to the recent appearance of Alfine-8 bar-end/downtube shifter from MicroShift and an integrated shifter/levers from Portland's own Gevenalle. Get in touch if you're interested. We're also offering now an 11-speed Wolverine Daily Grinder with dynamo system, rack, and fenders, based on the new v3 frame in red or black. Or you can have us build the same specs using a v2 or v2.1 orange or black frame, subject to the availability of your size and color. You can see pictures here of an orange one with gumwall tires. The 11-speed versions are actually less expensive than the 8-speed, and that's just a function of the super-low price on the complete 11-speed build kits we were able to get. We can also do an Alfine 11 Wolverine with drop bars using Microshift's STI-like 11-speed shifter. Questions people ask us about this bike: Q: Don't I need to adjust the belt tension every time I reinstall the rear wheel, such as when I change a flat? A: No. Soma, along with a few others, "gets" belt drive and have designed their dropouts accordingly. In this case, Soma uses Paragon sliding dropouts. The only time you should need to check and adjust belt tension is in the future, when the belt teeth gradually erode and the tension therefore gradually slackens. This adjustment is easily done on the Wolverine, and you won't have to do it for maybe the first 2,000 miles or so, although this depends on your riding style. The Portlandistan version adds a premium dynamo system, stylish Full Metal Fenders from Portland Design Works, and a light but stiff Axiom Streamliner Disc DLX rack, which has twice the capacity of most racks. Q: Can I make substitutions or other changes? A: Sure, but the price will likely change. We sourced build kits at a lower cost than you'd expect, and that's reflected in the surprisingly low price of the bike. But just let us know what you have in mind (email is best). Q: What are some upgrades I should consider? A: A Brooks Cambium or leather saddle would be nice. Either PDW Whiskey leather ergo grips or Ergon Biokork ergo grips would make good sense. If you want to charge your smartphone, Garmin, or camera off of the dynamo system, the Busch & Mueller Luxos U headlight does that very well, although it's expensive ($258). Kickstands are highly underrated. Schwalbe Marathon Supreme tires would make you the customer of our dreams.

Multiple Bike-of-the-Year awards speak for themselves. The Ute is a well-designed, carry-everything utility bike that makes quick work of trips to the store, dropping the kids off at school, and bringing the tree home for the holidays. The 7005 aluminum frame keeps it light and strong, and a Shimano 18-speed drivetrain supplies plenty of gearing for spinning up steep hills and across long flat roads alike. And for maintaining control under load, front and rear hydraulic disc brakes put the power down when you need it most. No utility vehicle would be complete without the necessary cargo-carrying essentials, so Kona throws in a composite rear deck with left- and right-side bags for all your haulin' needs. Finally, a kickstand and front and rear fenders finish this extremely versatile build, giving you the opportunity to do more — maybe everything! — by bike.
The bicycle is a great way to get around. It’s a lot less expensive than a car and a lot less crowded than public transportation. These days, many bicycle companies forsake practicality in the name of speed, weight, or some other frivolity. Well, not us. Behold the Flat Bar Cross-Check: a different take on an old favorite, and a go-to for those seeking solid two-wheel, non-motorized transport. It’s still the same Surly Cross-Check frame that has reliably carried people from here to there for decades, only with a spec that moves it deeper into the category of practical transportation. The Cross-Check frame is constructed of Surly's size specific 4130 CroMoly ‘Natch tubing and adorned with a simple and straight-forward build kit comprised of SRAM X5 components, tough Alex rims, and Surly's do-it-all Knard 41 tire. Instead of the standard drop bar, there’s a comfy flat bar with a 27-degree sweep to keep you sitting pretty, and an MSW Pork Chop rear rack to carry you and all of your stuff with the greatest of ease. One of Surly's goals with this bike was to keep the price tag low and the usefulness high. That way, you’ll have some cash leftover just in case you want to stop for a happy hour on the way home from work.
Combine two parts versatility, one part bike-fueled thirst for the open road, and a dash of Minnesota-bred style, and you've got yourself All-City's Space Horse Disc. The 612 Select chromoly frame and fork blend traditional touring and randonneuring geometry for a bike that's at home on a fully-loaded trek across the state or commuting to and from work. The smaller sizes are designed around 650B wheels to offer a better fit to smaller riders. A relatively short rear end and a bottom bracket that’s slightly lower than a standard road bike give it both agile handling for riding unbridled and increased stability when loaded. With the addition of the all-weather control of Promax disc brakes, this Space Horse is without a doubt the best version yet. A complete set of rack and fender braze-ons let you dress up the Space Horse in whatever livery you need for your particular adventure. The long and winding road calls for equipment you can count on, and the SRAM Apex 20-speed drivetrain promises smooth shifts and hill-topping gearing for miles to come. The whole package rolls on a pair of quality WTB rims and VEE Speedster tires that offer unbelievable traction in wet or dry conditions. And all the usual All-City details are present, including a rust-fighting ED coating, a stylish integrated seatpost clamp, and signature All-City dropouts with a removable derailleur hanger.
The Big Fat Dummy is a long tail cargo bike that took a few too many doses of growth hormones. At first glance, you might say that Surly just put bigger tires on a Big Dummy. But if you said that, you'd actually be very wrong so just… don't. Think of Big Fat Dummy as more of a second or third cousin to Big Dummy rather than a brother. They share some of the same DNA and look sort of similar, but they're two very different bikes and really only interact when they both reach for the potato salad spoon at that family reunion that no one really wants to be at anyway. Now that that's out of the way, let's get down to the nitty gritty of what makes this hulking beast of a bike tick. Surly's goal with designing a cargo bike around fat tires was to create the most stable, stiff, and traction-laden ride possible while hauling a ton of stuff. Big Fat Dummy has a longer toptube and slacker headtube than its more svelt cousin giving it a nice, predictable, and stable ride. They also used thinner, lighter tubing to construct its cargo area so while it's an overall burlier bike, there's not much difference in weight. Big Fat Dummy accepts either 10mm or 12mm axles in the rear with a spacing of 190/197mm. That big ol' spacing equates to one thing: tire clearance for days. Big Fat Dummy maxes out at a massive 26 x 5.25" tire.* While that large of a tire provides the most traction and stability a bike can possibly offer, it's also a lot of rubber to push and might not be for everybody. Luckily, Big Fat Dummy is also a blast to ride with 3" tires too. It uses the same 100mm suspension-corrected fork as the Wednesday, meaning if you want to add a little squishy squishy to your ride, you can throw a Bluto on and let ‘er rip. If you intend to carry a passenger on your Big Fat Dummy, Surly requires use of their Dummy Rail Collars. These provide a secondary retention system for the rack, as well as stiffen the rack system. In addition, a stoker handlebar set up, found on tandem bicycles, is recommended as well. Make sure to check with seat post manufacturer for stoker handlebar compatibility. All Big Fat Dummy framesets and bikes ship with a Dummy deck, rails, bags, and the aforementioned Dummy Rail Collars so you can immediately start hauling cargo — human or otherwise. Big Fat Dummy is ready and willing to carry all sorts of crap — literally. It's already in use on an organic farm in Ecuador so it's likely that it's hauled some form of manure by now. *Using a 26 x 5.25" tire will cause some drivetrain limitations.
