Stop Cycles/One Ghost Industries Proletariat Carbon Drive 11/8/n360
This is the Proletariat, the first of a new breed of supercommuter designed for Portlanders by a Portland start-up company called Stop Cycles (One Ghost Industries). The Proletariat excels at serious, long-distance commuting in all conditions, and it’s as low-maintenance as a bicycle can get. The bike shown above was reviewed here after passing its first 2,000 miles. Below, the Alfine 8 with drop bars and JTek bar-end shifter, on sale for $1159. Some of us like it best among all the Proletariats we’ve built.
Proletariat is sold as a frameset or as a complete, belt- or chain-drive bike. Typically we build these up with the finest, toughest all-weather component groups available: Gates Carbon Drive, an internally geared hub (Shimano Alfine 11-speed or 8-speed; Nuvinci n360), Avid or Shimano mechanical or hydraulic disc brakes, Alfine front dyno hub with dyno lights, and fender/rack mounts for everything from light commuting to heavy touring. Nuvinci’s n360 hub with chain drive or belt drive is available now.
Complete 8-speed chain-drive builds are now in stock in all sizes. With flat bars, $1099. With drop bars and J-Tek bar-end or Versa shifter, $1199.
Available colors: matte green or matte gunmetal grey.
7000 series butted, hydroformed aluminum frame constructed in Taiwan.

Price: $1699 8-speed, $2199 11-speed.
Custom builds will range from $1600-2300, depending on component choices. Custom builds can include components from Thomson, Chris King, Brooks, and many others.
Shipping for the complete bike: about $125-145 with insurance. Shipping of frameset: about $65 with insurance. Amtrak Express to major cities can be much cheaper, e.g., Portland to Chicago, $49 for the complete bike.
The frameset is available separately for $299 (MSRP $479), or $599 including the Gates CenterTrack kit (cog, belt, beltring, typically 50/24 with an 8-speed hub).

Australian customers: We offer low-cost, insured shipping to Australia. Please see https://www.priceusa.com.au/order/?mod=order to get a quick shipping quote. You’ll need to enter these box dimensions for a complete bike: 133 x 22 x 79 cm, gross weight 17 kg. Bonus: There is no within-US shipping charge for Australian customers, because PriceUSA has an office in Portland.
Hey, what kind of cranks are those? That’s an FSA Patterson Metropolis two-speed internally geared crankset. Works great on the Prole. Adds $299 but expands your gear range to about that of a mountain triple with the n360 or Alfine 8 speed hub. Even wider with the 11-speed, of course.
