Joe Bike’s rendition of a Dutch-style cargo bike is nimbler, quicker, and much easier to handle and store than its longer-box Dutch counterparts. The box carries a 150 lb. load without a problem and includes a folding bench seat with two sets of shoulder straps. The latest-generation Sturmey-Archer 8-speed hub is rain-protected and virtually maintenance-free. Its powerful drum brake works just as well in wet weather as in dry. We’ve geared the drivetrain to take full advantage of the new Sturmey’s 325% range, giving this bike an uncanny ability to climb Portland’s hills and bridges with even heavy loads. Optional external drivetrains are now available.
Standard features include heavy-duty alloy rims, stainless fenders with mudflaps, a skirt guard, a full chain guard, a see-through rain canopy for the box, a rear light that also incorporates an automatic brake light, a very low-resistance Shimano dynamo front hub with a super-bright daylight-sensitive headlamp, an old-fashioned bell, a rear-wheel lock, and Schwalbe Marathon tires. Frame made in China; the bike is re-made in Portland with superior components. $1299 for the fully equipped bike; $1599 includes a front disc brake and Alfine dynamo hub.
A superb external-drive SRAM 8-speed that offers even lower gearing for steeper hills and heavier loads is now available ($1599). This can be mated to a triple front chainring for 24 speeds that will make the Boxbike probably the second most useful cargo bike on the market (the first being our flagship multipurpose cargo bike, the Joe Bike).

Shipping to residential customers tends to run under $250 for pretty much anywhere in the lower 48 states.
