We’re sold out of the first-generation boxbike. The 2010 Boxbike have hit the streets, with improvements from front to back:

* New front brakes: A 203 mm Avid front disc brake (optional), Avid V-brake strong enough to leave skid marks (standard), or a Sturmey drum brake (optional) in 20″ wheels handbuilt in Portland.

* Drivetrains: A new SRAM/Shimano external drivetrain with a 70 mm Sturmey drum brake (standard) or a 203 mm Avid disc brake (optional); or Shimano Alfine 8-speed hub with a 203 mm disc brake (optional)

* A new chrome-plated fork modified specifically for the boxbike

* A new Truvativ crankset with pant guard

* Optional Ecospeed e-assist, designed and built in Portland, now at a lower price

* Powdercoating by Portland Powder Coating in your choice of colors: glossy black, glossy beige (2 coats), glossy robin’s egg blue (2 coats), metallic purple, olive drab, and glossy slate grey with a little blue in it (2 coats). Two-color combinations are possible. Or choose your own color if you don’t mind spending a little more time (a week or two) and money (around $150 per coat).

We now have a few different cabin and canopy options, all handbuilt in Portland:

*besides the standard wooden box, we also offer an extremely strong, lightweight aluminum/fabric cabin with a vibration-dampening, hammock-style seat for two kids, along with pockets inside and behind the cabin for storing toys, books, drink bottles, clothes, etc. (Pictured at top with black fabric; color choices are available).

*We’ve hired a local boatbuilder to make extremely durable lapped wooden boxes that look like galleons (see photos by Bikeportland.org above). The prow includes a lockable storage compartment.

*Also available is a sleek rain canopy (pictured) that keeps both your kids and your hands warm and dry.

Joe Bike’s rendition of a Dutch-style cargo bike is nimbler, quicker, and much easier to handle and store than its longer-box counterparts. The standard box carries a 150 lb. load without a problem and includes a folding bench seat with two sets of shoulder straps. The optional cabins described above have even higher capacities.

Standard features include heavy-duty alloy rims, stainless fenders with mudflaps, a skirt guard, a see-through rain canopy for the box, a rear light that also incorporates an automatic brake light, a very low-resistance Shimano dynamo front hub with a super-bright daylight-sensitive headlamp, an old-fashioned bell, a rear-wheel lock, and Schwalbe Marathon tires. Basic frame made in China; the bike is re-made in Portland with superior components as well as braze-ons and structural reinforcements. Pricing for the 2010 model starts at $1699. All models are fully equipped.

Shipping to residential customers tends to run under $300 for pretty much anywhere in the lower 48 states. Please call us at 503 232-1107 for more information.
