Fenders and mudflaps

Proletariat commuter

We carry fenders from Sykes (wood or bamboo; made in Portland), Portland Design Works, SKS, Axiom, Planet Bike, Civia, Velo Orange. Our mudflap brands include Brooks, Buddy Flaps, locally made leather flaps from Walnut Studiolo, and Planet Bike.

If you’re new to riding in the Portland rain, there are a couple of things you should know. First, wood and bamboo fenders are notably lighter than plastic and tend to last longer despite the rain. The common assumption is that it’s the other way around in both regards. Two, fenders and mudflaps aren’t just for keeping spray off yourself–they’re for protecting cyclists behind you from getting spray and grit in their eyes (as awakening as that feeling can be on a Monday-morning commute). These are courtesy accessories as much as anything.
